Roger Estrany (@a_dos_manos on instragram) is definitely one of my favorite abstract tattooist! I discovered his work about two years ago, and BAM! I felt in love with his compositions! “How such textures can be so nicely combined together and how can they fit so well the body that wear them ?”. Tattoos after tattoos it kept impressing and intriguing me ! Today it is my infinite pleasure to present his amazing creative process, specifically applied to a couple-tattoo that he did for “Céline and Sandy”. (The text has be translated by me, the original Spanish version is visible at the end). Please, enjoy the Creative Tattoo Process, of Roger Estrany, my friend and tattooer:

My creation process begins with the demand for a new tattoo.

In that specific case, Céline and Sandy suggested a composition including the following elements: Earth, Air, Water, Fire with the addition of the Soul. At that point, I perceived my first feelings and judgments. The composition I imagined did not comport any realistic elements and there was a set in the union of their arms while having an independent piece for each one of them.

Once they accepted that proposal, I started collecting information that comes to me from them and from questions I asked them. I sketched lines, I choose textures and what movement is going to join the pieces, what division will split the tattoo, which part each arm will carry, how the individual will parts feel, how to continue from the division, how it will marry the conical shape of their arms and which parts will be joined.

In the process, I project the ideas that arise on paper, I take notes of what I imagine as movement and composition, it is here when two new elements appear, their center, its internal space and its plot or garden, the exterior space this leads me to personalize even the more the piece, I feel them more and I continue with questions, how to make everything interact properly without losing the line? how to keep the individual in the whole? how will each element …

Of course, all the different parts of the process are beautiful, but it is truly exciting to develop from inputs and texture sections, imagining the lines and the movement, changing and cutting without losing them and always keeping in mind that will wear the piece on their skin! The following part of the process arrives with the presentation of the sketch and the explanation of the How and Why. It’s then time to draw on the bodies and apply the changes that appear, because the idea on paper is just that, an idea that changes when passing it to the volume of the body, the technique that I will use for the different textures and lines and care.

For Sandy and Céline it was their very first tattoo. We spent an entire weekend together, questioning, interacting, building the trust to enjoy the experience, from silence to words and fully enjoying the gratitude of vibrating together.

Céline and Sandy (Proceso de tatuaje).
